FAQs

For a hail damage insurance claim, do I contact my insurance agent or a roofing contractor first?
To file an insurance claim for hail damage, first have a reputable roofing contractor inspect your roof and provide an estimate. Then, file a claim with your homeowner's insurance company. Have your roofing contractor present when the insurance adjuster inspects your property. This ensures that your scope of damage will be included in your insurance claim. Examples of damage can include roofing, windows, siding, solar, gutters, and paint.
Can J&K Roofing help with insurance claims?

J&K Roofing can help you navigate the insurance claim process to get your storm-damaged roof repaired or replaced quickly and efficiently. We have extensive experience working with homeowners and insurance companies, and we have relationships with all major insurance companies. If you are concerned about any hail damage or storm damage to your property, please give us a call to set up a complimentary roof inspection.

Does my homeowners’ insurance cover hail damage?

Most homeowners’ insurance policies cover hail damage, but there are some exceptions. In some areas, insurance companies may exclude wind and hail damage from coverage, or they may have a separate deductible for each type of damage. To be sure, check your homeowner’s insurance policy or contact your insurance company.

Is it illegal for a roofing contractor to waive my insurance deductible?
Yes, it is illegal for a roofing contractor to waive your insurance deductible in Colorado. This is stated in Colorado Senate Bill 38, which was signed into law in 2012 to protect consumers from roofing fraud.
Will my insurance claim also pay for replacement windows or other exterior projects?
Yes, but it depends on the amount of hail damage to the exterior of your home and your homeowner's insurance policy. We also offer financing options to help you upgrade your windows, roof, solar and exteriors projects if this is not a weather-related event.
When can I hire a roofing contractor and start repairs after hail damage?
If you have hail damage and are filing an insurance claim, you can sign a contract with a roofing contractor based on an estimate provided during the property inspection. Photos and the estimate will be submitted to your insurance company.  Once your insurance company approves the claim, materials are ordered, and work can begin. Start the insurance claims process as soon as possible.
My insurance company turned down my claim. Now what?
If your insurance claim is denied, you can request a second inspection with a different adjuster and have your roofing contractor on-site to discuss all damage. This can help to surface any issues that were missed in the first inspection.
What is a supplement?

A roofing insurance claim supplement is a request for additional money from your insurance company to cover the cost of repairs that were not included in the original estimate from your insurance company. This may be necessary because the initial estimate from your insurance company was too low, the scope of work has changed, or local building codes require additional work. Supplementing benefits homeowners by ensuring that your roof is repaired properly, protects you from financial hardship, and prevents disputes with your insurance company. Prices are set by third-party insurance software that calculates the cost of repairs, based on measurements and scope.

Will my insurance rates go up if I file an insurance claim?

Insurance companies can't typically raise your rates for a single claim caused by an "Act of God" storm. But they can raise rates for everyone in your area based on the storm's severity. So, if you don't file a claim, your premium increase will pay for everyone else's repairs except your own.

If you had hail damage in your neighborhood, give us a call. It's important to have a knowledgeable roofing professional there when the insurance adjuster inspects your roof. The insurance adjuster represents the insurance company's interests, not yours, so don't rely on just their inspection. You need a professional working for you to make sure all damage is adequately addressed and paid under the claim.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR INSURANCE POLICY

Filing an insurance claim for hail damage can be daunting, especially if you’re not familiar with the process or your homeowner’s insurance policy. Here are a few key terms you should know:

1

REPLACEMENT COST VALUE (RCV)

  • The amount your insurance company will pay to replace damaged property with new items of the same kind and quality. For hail damage, this may include your roof, windows, siding, gutters, and solar panels.

2

ACTUAL CASH VALUE (ACV)

  • The current value of your damaged property, minus depreciation. For example, a 10-year-old roof with a 30-year lifespan has used 33% of its useful life, so its ACV would be 67% of its original cost.

3

RECOVERABLE DEPRECIATION

  • The amount of depreciation that can be recovered once you complete repairs or replacements. For example, your insurance company may pay you the ACV of your roof minus the recoverable depreciation upfront. Once you have your roof replaced, you can file a supplemental claim to recover the depreciation.

4

HOME INSURANCE DEDUCTIBLE

  • The amount of money you must pay out of pocket before your insurance company will pay for a covered claim.
